Online gender-based violence (OGBV) is now a widely accepted term used to name the behaviours that harass and target women and gender-marginalised people on the internet. A much lesser known term — a subset of OGBV — is gendered disinformation, an evergrowing concern today.

Hate speech: strategies

Hate Speech Strategies

Women with visibility on the internet receive a disproportionate amount of hateful comments and threats because the internet remains a male-dominated space. Women's visibility in online spaces challenges gender inequality and male privilege, and those interested in preserving the status quo believe that violence will silence women and drive them offline.

Hate speech

Hate speech includes written, spoken or visual discrimination, harassment, threats or violence against a person or group on the basis of their gender, disability, sexual orientation, race, etc.

Any speech that trivialises, glorifies or incites violence against women is hate speech, just as speech that trivialises the Holocaust is anti-semitic and speech that glorifies attacks on people because of their race is racist.
