Take Back the Tech! is a campaign that reclaims the internet and women's often ignored herstory with technology, exploring and encouraging the creative use of digital technologies to denounce and eliminate online gender-based violence (GBV). Its name echoes back to the Take Back the Night marches all over the world, where women reclaimed public streets as their own, especially at night when they were told to stay inside because it wasn't safe. Today, the streets of the internet are increasingly inseparable from the streets of our lives and our communities.

Feminist Forwards

Take Back the Tech! would not be complete without fun tech

play!We invite you to participate in our Feminist Forwards brainstorms in English and Spanish 4 December, and in French on 10 December, to collaboratively dream about the messages we'd like to receive and send in times of protest or celebration.

What sentiments would you like to see pop up on your message feed to fire your commitment?

What would you say to a friend in need? Or that perfect comeback you thought of after the fact?

OUR COLLECTIVE STORY: 10 YEARS OF TAKING ACTION ON TECHNOLOGY AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

How have internet technologies changed in the past decade? How have these changes affected the way we engage, relate, organise and take action?

Take Back the Tech! started as the seed of an idea in 2006, recognising the need to reclaim women's historical contribution to technology development and to counter the growing expression of gender-based violence through information and communications technologies (ICTs).

Day 4 | Break the stereotype | Ms. Re-Present!

Language plays a key role in how we make meaning of the world. What is the language used to describe women and girls? How do they create an idea of who they are & their value? Reclaim language. Take control of women's representation. Change the story with reality. Ms. Re-Present!

Language plays a key role in how we make meaning of the world. They express our experiences, share how we feel, articulate our differences and connect our struggles and experiences.

The language used by all forms of media are powerful tools in the processes of meaning making. The language used in reporting tells us a lot about the assumptions that are made about people and their roles in society. The messages framed by the media shape the environment and spaces we inhabit, and contribute to the construction of norms, cultural ideas and stereotypes about gender.
